Year 4 visited the Earth’s Treasury Hall at The Natural History Museum

An eye-opening and ground-shaking day was had by all Year 4s at London’s Natural imageHistory Museum on Friday 03.02.17. Our day started with a journey that carried us up through a gigantic metal globe that enabled us to imagine we were travelling through the very centre of the earth itself. When we reached the Volcanoes and Earthquake exhibit we were given the chance, through hands on learning experiences, to examine real volcanic rock, explore how the different tectonic plates move and find out more about the dangerous job of a volcanologist.

The ‘Earth’s treasury’ section drew gasps of awe from all as we examined the array of IMG_0175colourful minerals, gems and rocks on display. We were particularly impressed when we spotted some very special fluorescent minerals that were able to glow in the dark. We were also amazed to discover a mineral that was the real life Kryptonite! ‘There were lots of beautiful jewels, minerals and even diamonds’ Jara.

Year 4 from John Perryn made tremendous progress throughout the day in terms of becoming better at Working in a Team. For example, groups who found the decision-making process a bit tricky in the morning when they were tasked with coming up with a team name were making quick team decisions about their building’s construction by the end of the day. The teams were taken on a fantastic tour of the building and also got to visit the upper floors’ decking area where they had a view across the construction site at The International Quarter, Stratford. Volunteers commented on the quality of the students’ questions and their professional behaviour throughout the offices.

Trip to Bank of England – 06.05.16

Last Friday, year 4 visited the Bank of England Museum to explore the world of money. This was John Perryn’s first ever visit here therefore we had lots to learn!

One exciting fact we learnt was, did you know that our bank notes are made out of cotton? A £5 note typically lasts one year. To help save paper, from September £5 notes will now be made from plastic! Can you guess who’s face will now be on the new notes? *Clue* He was Prime Minister during WWII.

Enjoy looking at our pictures, we all had lots of fun!

Year 4 – Trip to Wetlands Centre – 12.02.16

As part of our Science topic we have been exploring states of matter and the water cycle so we visited the Wetlands Centre to enhance our knowledge on how water is used within our surroundings.

We walked around the outdoor grounds of the centre and discovered what part water plays in the habitats of different animals. We then took part in an activity where we explored the impact of flooding on the environment and discovered ways to prevent it.

Year 4 trip – Science museum

As part of our science topic on electricity, we visited the Science Museum so we can expand our learning and see models of the different types of electricity that we had been learning about in the past few weeks. We learnt about the safety of electricity. We considered the impact of the energy on environment and how we can change our lifestyle to save energy. It was interesting to see the link between energy and electricity, and it was exciting to play electricity games. Most importantly it was great to be able to explore in the Science Museum and experiment with the features in the museum.

– Now can you think of one thing that you would like to learn about electricity before we move on from this topic?

While we were at the Science Museum, we had a look at the next topic we are going to learn; which is states of matter. We looked at the differences between the 3 matters, observed the differences in the particles and saw the way the matters changed depending on the container they were in. It was good to see the displays and models in the museum before we start our topic as we will be able to relate it back to our experience.

– Can you remember the 3 matters that we looked at?

– Which matter is always around us in the air we breathe?

– What is one thing that you would like to learn about in this topic or you would like to experiment?
